解读
玛雅·安吉洛在贫民窟的匮乏生活中长大，八岁时遭到性虐待并被她母亲的男朋友弗里曼（Freeman）强奸，后来突然失声五年，没有说一句话。而后的生活，也一直颠沛流离，她积极参与人权运动，亲身见证身边的朋友不断被杀害。
这样的人生痛苦么？当然痛苦，以至于《卫报》如此评论：
了解她一生的同时你就会经不住想自己一生究竟做了些什么，并经不住庆幸自己没有遭受她哪怕一半的不幸。
她的人生里，充满着我们根本无法想象的苦难，所以，她说出这样的话，才有着重若千钧的分量。
